The vanilla pod is the fruit of a climbing orchid that grows wild in the forests of Central America. Even before the arrival of the Spanish conquistadors at the end of the 15th century, it was used by the Aztecs to flavor chocolate. Vanilla essence is derived from the original vanilla pod and just a few drops can add a magnificent flavor to ice cream, cookies, cakes, liqueurs, fruit compotes and flans.
